Deep in the Okavango Delta of Botswana hides the Wilderness lodge of Little Vumbura. In order to get there, guests and hosts must take a boat from the mainland to the island where the lodge sits. One of the most unique lodges in the Delta also offers the potential for some pretty unique sightings along the way.
During our stay, we saw lechwes, hippos, impalas, a crocodile, a monitor lizard, various birds, and a number of other animals just from the boat rides between the safari trucks and the lodge. But of everything we saw, the elephants created the most special reaction.
Towering over even the tallest human, an African elephant can stand around 10 feet tall at the shoulder. That’s like a child looking at Shaq. And that’s exactly how I felt: like a child looking at my favorite athlete.
While admiring these wandering creatures as they looked to cool off in the late morning, I couldn’t help but think about Jurassic Park. There was something almost prehistoric about watching animals of that size move so quietly through the landscape. I was completely in awe.
